Iran: Ebrahim Raissi takes oath in Parliament

In Iran, the new president Ebrahim Raissi was sworn in this Thursday in front of Parliament. The ceremony was broadcast live by state television. The new leader emphasized one of the priorities of his mandate : the lifting of sanctions imposed on Tehran, by former US President Donald Trump, on the nuclear issue.

He said he was open to “any diplomatic plan” to end these sanctions that undermine the country’s economy, while warning that Iran will not give in to pressure.

Winner of a presidential election marked by a record abstention last June, Ebrahim Raissi is a cleric ranked among the ultraconservatives.

About 80 senior foreign officials were present at the swearing-in, including the presidents of Iraq and Afghanistan, the heads of the Parliament of Russia, Syria and South Africa, according to State television.

Representatives of the European Union, including Enrique Mora, who heads the Iranian nuclear talks in Vienna for Brussels, also made the trip.
