Dubai: a new way of life on the outskirts

Dubai is a city known for its skyscrapers, but far from the high-end hotels, beach clubs and But far from the high-end hotels, beach clubs and the impressive constructions of the Palm Tree and the Marina, there is residential areas on the outskirts where many residents live.

Dubai’s expansion has been accompanied by an increase in residential areas and, after the pandemic, many people have moved from apartments to individual houses with outdoor space.

Jumeirah Islands is a purpose built gated development close to the Marina. The villas are grouped on 46 small islands surrounded by lakes and greenery. Like many others, the community that lives there has its own supermarket, school, clubhouse and leisure facilities.

Sheelah Odedra is a mother of two and a resident of Jumeirah Islands. The family moved shortly after the birth of their daughter.

“We didn’t really know what we were looking for, but we needed more space. The best thing is to live in an area with lots of parks, nature, a clubhouse and a number of restaurants.”

Sheelah says these kinds of amenities feel like be part of a communitywhich is useful when you have children.

The Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse has restaurants, gym, playground, swimming pool and lounge. Many expats consider such facilities to be highly desirable and part of the lifestyle compromise involved in living in a different country from that of friends and family.

Lorena GuerreroGeneral Manager of the Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse describes the success of this place: “They feel that the island of Jumeirah belongs to them. You will see here, no matter what time of day, a group of young people or families with children because there is something for all ages.

Another recent construction, that of Dubai Hills, is presented as a city within the city. This project covers more than 11 million square meters, with thousands of apartments and villas, schools, hospitals, a shopping center and an 18-hole championship golf course.

Louise Heatley decided to buy his house in Dubai Hills: “I have been in Dubai for 26 years, I have lived in many different places and I have always been looking for a place close to all amenitieswho can make my life a little easier.”

On a professional level, Louise Heatley is Managing Director of the real estate company Exclusive Links. She adds that she is also interested in what constitutes a good investment : “I wanted something that will still be salable in the future. So, yeah, I thought Dubai Hills ticked all the boxes to be a good place to live.”

She considers that the most surprising thing for most visitors is to see that the inhabitants of the city lead a very normal life : “We’re not always out living the high life. It’s similar to what they do at home, we go to work, we come home and we eat dinner.”

As the city expanded, more and more neighborhood hotels sprung up to bring people from around the area together.

the First Collection JVC is a four-star hotel located in Jumeirah Village Circle. This larger area was launched in 2005 and is built on an area of over 8.7 million square meters with a mix of large villas, townhouses and apartments.

Brendan McCormackVice President of Food and Beverage First Group Hospitalityexplains that he has seen the growth of communities in the outskirts of Dubai and that the places where people can meet are at the heart of these areas: “I think Dubai’s infrastructure has grown tremendously and that means many of these areas that a few years ago seemed remote are now very easily accessible.”

He added that residential areas on the outskirts have become “very, very popular with families” and that kind of community feeling has really started to develop in Dubai.
