Austria: clinic tries monoclonal antibody treatment for Covid-19 patients

After two years of pandemic, treatments against Covid-19 are increasing. In Austria, in a clinic in Vienna, a pilot project for treatment with monoclonal antibodies has started for patients with Covid-19.

The medicine, known as Sotrovimab, is used to treat Covid-19 patients at high risk, but with mild symptoms and not requiring supplemental oxygen.

“This treatment is aimed initially at patients with immunodeficiency, suffering from cancer or chronic diseases such as diabetes, or chronic inflammatory rheumatism. We first choose these patients”, explains Susanne Drapalik, the doctor at the head of this project.

The idea of ‚Äč‚Äčthis therapy is to select natural antibodies and reproduce them artificially to then administer them in treatment, usually by an infusion.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) had approved this new treatment in December, saying that it considerably reduced “hospitalizations in patients at risk.
